What do you think about fitness/nutrition apps?
The other day, someone asked me what I thought about these apps that help us keep track of our food – calories and nutrients. While I think some apps (and there are some better than others) have merit, I only recommend we use them so that we get and stay on track with our healthy eating.
Sure, using these apps will help you be more aware of what you are eating and how much food/beverage intake you are consuming. And, this is a helpful eyeopener! But, it’s too much to use them 365 days – 24/7 (however, if that works for you – great) and most of them don’t help us focus on what is most important.
Why? Because these apps typically focus on counting calories and living by the “calories in/calories out” theory. And, unfortunately with this approach our bodies won’t get the optimal nourishment they need to thrive in the here and now – and for longevity (and by longevity – I mean living a long, healthy and vibrant life).
This brings me to my 4th mistake we all make when we are trying to lose weight – or better said; live our healthiest weight – and that’s obsessing over calories.
When we focus only on calories in, we tend to treat our body like a bank account. However, your body is really a chemistry lab. While calorie intake needs to be considered, it’s the quality of your calories that is paramount. Research shows that focusing on food quality, rather than strict calorie counting, leads to effective weight loss and a stronger plus healthier mind and body.
That’s because quality foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy fats give you so many benefits. These foods nourish your body with essential nutrients, regulate your appetite, improve metabolism, reduce cravings and help your digestion while keeping your immune system strong to fight off all the viruses and illnesses that are running rampant. These foods also help stabilize blood-sugar levels, providing steady energy throughout the day, while complimenting your workouts by building strong muscles and bones.
Eating by a balanced plate (protein, fiber and healthy fats – mostly plant based) rather than by the calorie, is a simple way to steady blood sugar so insulin levels stay low and fat burning stays high. And, who doesn’t want that? I know I do!
So next time you check a label for the calories – take a look at the nutrients and ask yourself does this food/beverage give my body/mind the nourishment it needs to do all the activities I love and help me feel my best and healthiest self — now and into my future? I’ll be doing the same!
Now, back to the topic of nutrition apps. If you need a good one to get you on track, reach out to me. I’ve tried a lot personally and with my clients so I can give you some great options. Of course good old pen and paper work too!
Let’s continue to age powerfully in 2024 by nourishing ourselves with yummy healthy food and drinks.
Next up– my last mistake we all make — and it’s an important one to change. Stay tuned.

Christine
