We are now on to the 4th benefit of our secret to longevity (resistance training) and that is bone health.
This is a big one (well, they are all important benefits!).
So far, we know that if we strength train with weights, resistance bands, gym equipment and even body weight (hello yoga!) –we will benefit our body and mind in so many ways. With this fitness training you get better weight management, improved hormone balance, increased fat loss and bone health – today’s topic.
I wish someone told me years ago when I was in my early 50s to get a bone density test (called a Dexa Scan). This test is SO easy to do and takes about 10-15 minutes. Unfortunately, the major health groups and most doctors don’t recommend this test until we are 65 – unless we have osteoporosis in our family and/or we are showing signs of it (breaking bones easily, our height decreasing more than normal each year to name two symptoms).
Curious about my bone density, I asked my doctor last year to do the test. WOW! I found out I have osteoporosis (and arthritis) in my hips and osteopenia — due to genetics. If I took that test years ago, the result would have probably been osteopenia which can be reversed. So my advice is get the Dexa Scan if you haven’t already!
Now on to preventing (or helping if you have osteopenia or osteoporosis) this bone loss.
Resistance exercises stimulate the activation of bone-building cells, making your bones denser and stronger. Strengthening your bone structure increases stability and lowers the risk of fractures and injuries, leading to a more confident and injury-free daily life.
Research suggests that consistent resistance training can reduce several risk factors for osteoporosis, including improved strength, balance, and muscle mass. In addition, resistance training can be fun! And, we can also obtain that exercise “high” that comes from cardio. In addition we get to see and FEEL results. Our muscles look toned and every day movements become more easy to do – and that includes our active lifestyle activities like hiking, kayaking, biking…
So, what is stopping you from resistance training? I’d love to know! Maybe it’s mindset and reframing can help you start this very important exercise for your health and wellbeing – in the present moment and as you make “deposits” to your longevity. Or maybe you already resistance train – I’d love to hear your results.
Resistance training gives us wellness in the inside AND outside. For more of that wellness – check out my link to clean non-toxic self care that helps us age well on the outside AND, inside. I cannot say enough good things about this company (founded by a woman) and products that I’ve now be with and use (products) for about ten years.
Come on over here and get yourself some Valentine’s love!
Lots of love, strength and healthy bones,
Christine
