Numerous students and clients experience the feel good of resistance training. How about you?
Last blog, we looked at benefit # 1 of resistance training: building and maintaining strong muscles.
Today, let’s discuss # 2 benefit: Hormone Balance.
As we age, insulin and other hormones can become imbalanced (I know mine did!), increasing our risk of insulin resistance and weight gain (especially in our middle section).
Resistance training has a positive impact on these two hormones; insulin and cortisol, with significant implications for the aging process. When we strength train we enhance insulin sensitivity, making it easier for our body to process glucose more efficiently and reduce the risk of age-related metabolic conditions like type 2 diabetes.
Specifically, when we strength train, the body optimizes the release of our growth hormone ( GH or somatotropin, also known as human growth hormone hGH or HGH). This hormone plays a pivotal role in muscle growth and repair. Strength training also helps boost our testosterone production which helps support fat metabolism and overall vitality.
Cortisol, your body’s primary stress hormone, can accelerate the aging process when it stays elevated (and cause poor sleep and weight gain). With resistance training, you can lower your cortisol levels and mitigate the adverse effects of chronic stress. Studies show that regular exercise protects against the negative emotional feelings associated with stress. When you exercise, in other words, you raise your happy “juices” (at least in my classes!).
